Your Story: Get Gorgeous!

My forgetfulness is your gain today.

I am in desperate need of a haircut and so I've got the fabulous ladies of Gwendolynn's Salon & Spa on my brain today.  And so I'm sharing them with you.

Some of you are already connected with this fantastic group of ladies, but for those of you who are not, you must go see them.  From hair to nails, facials to massages, they do it all and they do it the best!  

But beyond talent, these ladies have joy, they have a passion for what they do, and they have tremendous purpose.  Recently they began working with "Friends Are By Your Side", a charity organization that does hair replacement for those suffering with cancer.  Truly, these ladies are amazing.

My Story/ Small Changes

"Just make it small."  She laughs every time I say it, but every time, that's all I can give her.

My hairstylist and friend, Rebecca, can not fully grasp the trauma I suffered, being a child of the 80's and 90's, on Long Island, in the days of big hair and big accents.  So she just chuckles and works her magic.

Wait a second.

Hair?

Jen, you're sending us a blog post about your hair?

Well, yeah.  This is Friday right?  I gotta get personal right?

So yes, I'm sharing about the big hair chop I got this week, because it pretty much sums me up these days.

1. I bet you know how insane mornings can be as a mom.  Kids, workouts, drop offs, work.  Time is precious and if I could cut 20 minutes out of my morning (literally!), you bet I will.

2. I have a love/hate with change.  I bet we all do.  It scares me but not as much as regret does.  So something small like my hair (pun intended, Rebecca!) can give me confidence to make bigger changes.

3. Frumpy mom.  The term sits on my brain and lingers.  What better way to spruce up my frumpiness than with a fun new haircut?

4. It's just hair and it grows back.  I'm learning not to be afraid to take risks.

So that's my story this week.

Quick Tip to Rock Your Session: Go Pro

One of the most effective ways to take your portrait sessions to the next level (the FABULOUS level) is to have your hair and make- up professionally done.  Professional hair and make-up artists know how to give you the perfect look for being in front of the camera, which will take some of the pressure off you on your big day.  Not to mention how luxurious it is to be pampered before being in front of the camera.  Being treated like a star before the shoot lends itself well to feeling like a star during the shoot.

Many professional photographers have recommendations for where to have your hair and make-up done, and I have my team of favorites as well.  I have partnered up with Gwendolynn's Salon & Spa for the last year and their team of stylists is extraordinary!  You'll hear more about them in my next blog post!

Hair Q&A: Talking With A Pro

If ever there was a season to designate "hair season", it's now! High school seniors are preparing for prom, young brides are preparing for their wedding day, and the rest of us are gearing up for heat, humidity, and the challenges that summer brings to our hair.

Over the last few months, I have connected with a salon of fantastic hair gurus at Gwendolynn's Salon & Spa, ladies that know their stuff when it comes to up-dos, healthy hair, and gorgeous style. So I thought I'd call in one of my favorite ladies, Rebecca, to share with us some tips on how to look our best for "hair season".

I shot a few questions her way, and this is what she had to share:

Q. Is it true that a cold rinse at the end of a shower or hair washing is good for your hair? If so, why?

A. Yes, it's true. The cold water closes down the cuticle of the hair shaft, allowing your hair to be smoother and shinier. It also helps to hold in your color longer.

Q. Is there anything we ladies can do to speed up hair growth (my daughter would LOVE to know this one!)?

A. Regular trims will not make your hair grow faster, but it will make it grow healthier and will prevent split ends from breaking off. Thus the hair will get longer faster.

Q. What is the best way to keep split ends away?

A. The best way to keep split ends away is to get a trim on a regular basis.

Q. Are there any fun new up-dos in style this prom season?

A. Braids are huge this prom season, incorporated with your up-do. Loose soft up-dos are in.

Q. Any cute ways to pull off pony-tails for these hot summer months? Something outside the normal "pull back and go" routine?

A. Pull your hair back in a regular ponytail. Fasten with a ponytail holder. Above the ponytail holder, separate the hair in the middle and loop the tail end of the ponytail through the separation, going over the top. Side ponytails are really in also.

All About Her!

Any moms out there with beautiful little girls? Girls with gorgeous hair, or girls who love to play dress up, or who love fairy tales and stories of princesses? Well then, have I got a treat for you!

Meet my friend, Beth! Beth runs a business from home called "All About Her" and that's just what it is! Beth has everything for our little girls- adorable hats, fabulous headbands, clips, tutus, even little shoes and leg warmers. And that's just the beginning! Last week I was treated to an afternoon of girly girl delights, and I got to shoot her adorable daughters modeling all the goods for me. Here are just a few of Beth's treats!
